Award Winners 2013

All prizes were presented by both children’s juries.

Mo-Award
(Jury award, 1500 Euros, from age 9)
Mateso
Collective Camera, Belgium 2012, 8:00 min., Animation

Jury statement:
This year’s Mo-Prize is awarded to the Belgian animation short “Mateso” by Collective Camera. The film shows the true and moving story out of young Mateso’s perspective, who fled the war in Africa with his mother and moved to Europe. We give the director great credit for chosing such an important current topic and illustrating it in an animation. The film has a unique and thought-provoking dramatic composition. Right until the very end it is uncertain whether Mateso and his mother will find a new home in Europe. A sad, but true ending.

Special Mention
:

Esca viva
Susanna Nicciarelli, Italy 2012, 5:20 min., Animation

Jury statement:
We would like to give the animation short “Esca viva” by Susanna Nicciarelli special credit. The animation in “Esca viva” has convinced us. A very funny and smart film! It is fascinating to watch the little fish outwit the bigger fish who wants to eat him.

Friese Award sponsored by Levantehaus (Jury award, 1500 Euros, age 4–8)
The Amber Amulet
Matthew Moore, Australia 2013, 22:25 min., Fiction

Jury statement:
This year’s Friese-Prize is awarded to the Australian short feature film “The Amber Amulet” by Matthew Moore. We were very excited about this funny, thrilling and entertaining film, that made us reflect and also a little sad. The boy with his dog is a hilarious super hero and it is very brave of him to help strange people. We didn’t expect the happy end.

„High five!“ Competition
Short film competition for children under 14 years. Films running max. 5 minutes, underlying an annually given topic. Topic 2013: “Be bold, be brave”.

A total of 600 Euros – sponsored by GEOlino, presented by the Mo-Jury and Friese-Jury.

1st Prize (300 Euros)
Netze
Margareta Kosmol, Germany 2013, 4:53 min., Documentary

Jury statement:
The first prize of this year’s High Five!-Competition is awarded to “Netze” (Nets) by Margareta Kosmol. “Netze” is a moving documentary short with lovely nature portraits and an astonishing insight into life. The film shows the importance of being brave and facing the truth, reminding us that we have to deal with pollution. The cinematography and film editing depicts the topic well and moved uns very much.

2nd Prize
(200 Euros)
Echappé
Moritz Musa/Nick Hempel, Germany 2013, 5:07 min., Fiction

Jury statement:
The second prize is awarded to the feature short “Echappé” by Moritz Musa and Nick Hempel. The story is gripping and we liked the style of the film. We appreciated that there was less talk, instead more imagery in the story telling. The boy is very brave and it is good that we get an idea of how terrible abuse by the parens can be. Luckily there are shelters for children and youngsters.

3rd Prize
(100 Euros)
Vernen
Lukas Klung, Germany 2013, 5 min., Animation

Jury statement:
The third prize goes to “Vernen” by Lukas Klung. The hand-made clay characters are very amusing and the cinematography is terrific. The film is very creative, as well as the special effects. The fact that the scaredy-cat saves the town shows us that no human is a pussy but that anybody can have the guts.
